PNWSHS is launching a Music Camp, to be held in 2018 in Alaska, the year after in the Seattle-Portland region, and in the year after that in the Oakland CA region. Then the schedule begins over again. The camp will teach and sing from the Cooper Sacred Harp with the typical sorts of teaching sessions on Rudiments, Leading, Accenting, Keying, All-Day Singing topics, and so forth. The specifics will be driven by the needs of the local region. For now, the title of the music camp is Fasola Boot Camp. (Alternative suggestions are solicited).
Purpose: to grow our local singings by having more of our
singers experience the growth-spurt in understanding and skill
that comes from Sacred Harp travel or immersive instruction. It
is expected that the grantee will return willing to share all
that they have learned with those in their local singing.
PNWSHS, Inc. has set a maximum amount of $400 per grant (and
there is a limited budget so either not all applicants who are
approved will receive the maximum or not all applicants will be
accepted in a given year).
To apply for the travel grant submit a statement explaining what
singing event the applicant wishes to attend and when, calculate
the cost of the trip and state what specific grant amount would
make it possible, and how this travel will benefit the applicant
and the local singing upon their return. This Statement should
be sent either by email to pnwshs@pacificnwsacredharpsingers.org
or to The Pacific NW Sacred Harp Singers, 15215 Tubbs Rd,
Buckley WA 98321.
Criteria:
1. Applicant must be a regular local singer in Washington state
who wishes to travel outside of Washington state to sing. For
the music camp held in Alaska, the applicant must reside in
Alaska; for the Seattle-Portland region camp the applicant must
reside in B.C, WA, or OR; for the Oakland region camp the
applicant must reside in CA.
2. Singing events must be at least one full day long: generally
conventions, all day singings and Camp Fasola or Fasola Boot
Camp.
3. Financial Need. Grants are intended for singers who would
otherwise find it difficult to travel. We do not investigate
your financial situation.
4. When possible we will give preference to singers who have not
traveled extensively, and those who have not received a grant in
the last year.
5. Grants may be as low as $50 or up to $400.
6. Grants are awarded prior to the event. Grants will not be
given if the application is made after the singing event.
7. Application Statements should be submitted at least two
months prior to the event you wish to attend.
8. Individuals will be granted no more than one travel grant per
year.
9. Current PNWSHS, Inc. board members and their families are
ineligible to receive grants.
10. The grants are given as reimbursements. Receipts or copies
of the receipts are required for tuition or travel expenses at
least up to the amount of the grant.
Here are two examples of trips that would meet the travel
grant guidelines:
Example One: attend
Camp Fasola (adult) which ran June 8-12 and all-day singings on
June 7, 8, 13, 14, and 15.
Airfare round-trip from SEA to BHM travelling on the cheap days
of June 5 & 16 = ~$500
Camp Fasola tuition for under 30 yr old = $250
Lodging before & after Camp and transportation in Alabama =
will arrange to stay with locals and travel with locals
Amount of travel grant requested: $250
Personal benefits will be instruction gained at Camp plus
experience of 4+ different All-Day Singings.
Benefit to PNWSHS will be a better-trained singer plus the
chance that one or more travelling singers will come to our
all-day singing(s) because this Washingtonian attended theirs.
Example Two: attend
Chattahoochee Sacred Harp Convention that was Aug 2 & 3.
Airfare round-trip from SEA to ATL travelling on cheap days of
July 31 & Aug 4 = ~$377
Lodging before & after and transportation in Atlanta = will
arrange to stay with locals and travel with locals
Amount of travel grant requested: $188
Personal benefits will be singing with and absorbing from
life-long prominent Sacred Harp singers while experiencing a
historically important and still strong convention.
Benefit to PNWSHS will be a more experienced singer and
strengthened ties between our singing community here and the
singing community in Georgia, that could potentially result in
reciprocal visits from those singers to our convention.
